FALL 2006

From the Director

The semester concluded with our fourth annual symposium exploring the topic of museums and civic engagement co-sponsored and co-organized by the CCNY and NYU graduate museum studies programs together with the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. This year students in the introductory museology class spoke on panels that addressed defining community; activating audiences; art audiences and civic engagement; reframing memory and addressing trauma; and democratizing process: who is the artist/author? We are currently exploring ways to continue the dialogue.

The introductory museology class always includes visits to museum professionals currently working in the field. This year we met with museum studies students who are currently working in museum education: Karen Leon and Gonzalo Casals at El Museo del Barrio and Mary Ann Furman at the New York Historical Society. They did a great and inspiring job!

In the Spring 2006 newsletter we announced that plans were underway for the exhibition Re-Cast: Postmodern Classical II, to be curated by museum studies students and sponsored by the Alexander S. Onassis Benefit Foundation, USA. A special topics seminar on the classical tradition will be offered in Fall 2007 in preparation for the exhibition which will take place in the lobby of Olympic Tower where the City College Parthenon casts are displayed on long term loan. The exhibition of contemporary art influenced by the classical tradition will be installed in available lobby spaces during Spring 2008.

A special thanks to Gonzalo Casals for once again designing our newsletter. Thanks to alumnae and current students for their news. We would like to hear from all of you!
